Fort Thomas Police Department wants to make sure that citizens know about a new scam going around just in time for spring travel.
Scammers are sending text messages claiming that recipients have unpaid toll fees and must provide sensitive information, such as credit card details, to settle the charges. The fraudulent messages threaten additional penalties if the supposed fees are not paid immediately. The texts include a payment link that directs users to a website designed to mimic an official toll authority site, but it is not legitimate.
Authorities advise that no toll authority in the United States sends alerts via text message. Instead, notifications are typically sent through traditional mail or email. Drivers who suspect they may have unpaid toll fees are encouraged to visit the official toll authority website for their state and enter their license plate number to verify any outstanding charges.
