Spring is nearly here and soon flowers will be blooming all over our great city. Besides flowers, we also have public art popping up in our parks!
We were blessed to receive the statue titled “Kentucky Family” by local artist Michael Skop (1932-2009) who had his studio and home over on Hawthorn Avenue for years. I want to thank David Hosea, Michael Clay Abner, Seth McLaughlin, Jan Eshelman, and Ken Bowman on their work on preserving this magnificent piece of 20th century art and adding it to the city’s parks. Check it out for yourself at Highland Hills Park.
I am also excited to announce that a statue of our very own namesake General George Henry Thomas will soon be installed at his podium at the top of Douglas come summer. Started in 2017 as part of our sesquicentennial celebration, the statue is going through final touches before it is shipped to the city. Make sure you follow the city’s socials for when the official unveiling will be taking place.
